Home-delivered meals and senior nutrition on the Nature Coast
A good meal, and a friendly face at the door, can be what keeps someone safe at home. Here are the two kinds of senior meals, who can get them, what they cost, and the one call that gets them started.

The short version:
- Two kinds of help: meals delivered to the door ("Meals on Wheels") for people who can't get out, and a hot lunch at a senior center for those who can.
- Both are for people 60 and older. They're paid for by the Older Americans Act, so there's no income test. You're invited to chip in, but no one is turned away for not paying.

Common questions
- Who qualifies for Meals on Wheels?
- Residents 60 and older who have trouble getting out to shop or cook. There's no income test. Call the Elder Helpline (Citrus & Hernando 1-800-262-2243, Pasco 1-800-963-5337) and they'll screen your parent.
- How much do senior meals cost?
- Older Americans Act meals have no set fee. You're invited to make a small voluntary donation, but no one is turned away for not donating.
- What if there's a waiting list?
- Ask about the wait when you call. In the meantime, a senior center lunch, private meal delivery (about $8 to $9 a meal), SNAP food benefits, and food banks can fill the gap.
- Does Medicare pay for meal delivery?
- Original Medicare does not cover ongoing meal delivery. Many Medicare Advantage plans deliver meals for a short time after a hospital or nursing-home stay, so check your plan.
What kinds of senior meals can you get?
There are two, and many families use both over time.
Meals delivered to the home ("Meals on Wheels")
A nutritious meal is brought to the door of an older person who has trouble getting out. Depending on the county, that's a hot meal on weekdays, or a weekly box of frozen meals. The delivery is also a quick wellness check, one more set of eyes on how your parent is doing.
A lunch at a senior center (congregate meals)
A hot meal served in a group at a senior or community center, alongside company, activities, and sometimes health screenings. For someone who can still get out, it's a meal and a reason to stay social.
Who qualifies, and what does it cost?
These meals are for residents 60 and older (a spouse of any age can often join too). For delivered meals, priority goes to people who are mostly homebound.
There is no income test, and no set fee. This is a federal Older Americans Act program, and the rules say no one can be turned away for not donating. You'll be invited to make a small, private, voluntary donation toward the cost, but it's your choice.
What if you don't qualify, or there's a wait?
Delivered meals sometimes have a waiting list, so ask about that when you call. In the meantime, you have options:
- Private meal delivery. Services like Mom's Meals ship ready-to-eat meals to any home, about $8 to $9 a meal (2025), with a delivery fee. No age or income rule. Prices change, so check when you order.
- Food stamps (SNAP). Florida makes SNAP easier to get for anyone 60 or older, since older households only have to meet the net income limit. Apply through the Florida Department of Children and Families at 1-866-762-2237.
- A Medicare Advantage plan may deliver meals for a short time after a hospital stay (often two to four weeks). Original Medicare does not pay for ongoing meal delivery, so check your plan.
- Food banks and pantries, including Feeding Pasco's Elderly in Pasco. The Elder Helpline can point you to the closest one.
