How much does it cost to clear out a whole house?

A full-service estate cleanout averages around $1,250 and commonly runs $275 to $4,000 or more, depending on the home's size and how much the crew handles. Plain junk hauling of a full truck runs up to about $800. A local quote is the only firm number.

Will charities really pick up furniture for free?

Yes. Habitat for Humanity ReStore picks up free in all three counties, and the Salvation Army and AMVETS also offer free pickup. Items must be clean and in good, working condition, and pickups can book a week or two out.

Do junk haulers take everything?

Almost everything, but not household hazardous waste like paint, chemicals, or asbestos. Very heavy items like a piano or hot tub cost extra. Ask before the crew arrives.

Does the junk actually get recycled or donated?

Many local haulers say they donate and recycle usable items before the landfill, but it depends on condition. If it matters to you, ask each company where your things go.

What does junk removal cost, and how is it priced?

Most junk removal is priced by how much space your stuff takes up in the truck, usually a fraction of a truckload, with a minimum charge for a small pickup. Some companies also price a single item on its own. Here are typical costs:

A few things push the price up: stairs (about $40 to $100 per staircase), very heavy items like a piano ($200 to $400) or a hot tub ($200 to $600), and a surcharge on refrigerators ($35 to $60). Most haulers will not take hazardous items like paint, chemicals, or asbestos, so set those aside for your county's household hazardous waste day.

Before you haul it: what can you donate, and who picks up free?

If a piece of furniture is still solid and clean, don't pay to throw it away. Several charities will come to the house and take it at no cost. Habitat for Humanity ReStore is your first call for large items, and it serves all three counties.

A few tips: donated items need to be clean and in good, working shape (charities turn down torn, stained, or broken things). Pickups can book out a week or two, so call early. And ask what each group takes, since most skip mattresses, sleeper sofas, and anything they'd have to carry down from an upper floor.

Sell, donate, or haul: how to decide

A simple rule keeps the pile moving:

• Donate what's still good but not worth selling. Use the free pickups above, and keep the receipt for a possible tax deduction.
• Haul the rest with a junk removal service. Many of them donate and recycle the usable pieces for you, so ask where your things end up.

Clearing a whole house, or an estate?
